Orthodontics correct malocclusion problems related to the position of the teeth and/or alignment of the bite. Orthodontic treatment benefits patients by improving oral functions, enhancing the appearance of the smile, and preventing dental complications.

Most people think of orthodontics as a dental treatment geared primarily towards pre-teens and teens, but many address these types of concerns as adults. At Fort Bend Dental, our dentists offer adult orthodontics to give individuals in Missouri City, TX, Richmond, TX, and across Fort Bend County, a healthier, better functioning, and more attractive smile.

Adult Orthodontics Candidates

Most people assume that orthodontic issues are corrected in the teen years, when malocclusion problems are likely to become apparent. In many cases this is true. However, not everyone has access to professional dental care during their childhood, nor can all parents afford to provide their children with orthodontic treatment. It is not unusual for malocclusion problems to be neglected until people are able to seek their own treatment as an adult. Adults who experience any of the following issues may be ideal candidates for adult orthodontics:

  • Crooked and/or twisted teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Teeth grinding/clenching
  • TMJ disorder or jaw pain
  • Difficulty biting, chewing, or speaking

It is important to note that some people may be ideal candidates for adult orthodontics even if they have previously undergone orthodontic treatment. Over time the teeth can shift back into their previous position, especially if the patient has not used a retainer to maintain orthodontic treatment results.

Personalized Treatment

Even though they want to enhance the health, function, and appearance of their smile, many adults are reluctant to undergo orthodontic treatment. Most kids do not like wearing braces, so it is easy to imagine how adults may feel about it. At Fort Bend Dental we personalize every adult orthodontic treatment plan, and offer several different orthodontic techniques. Our goal is to address malocclusion problems as effectively and discreetly as possible.

Traditional Braces

Traditional braces use a series of wires and brackets to apply pressure to the teeth and jaw, and encourage necessary movement. Adults often prefer not to wear traditional braces, because of their obvious appearance, but for severe malocclusion problems, this technique remains the most effective. Fortunately, we offer our patients Edgewise brackets, which are more comfortable and less visible than the bulky metal brackets that are often associated with braces treatment.

Aligners

Aligners are a very popular technique in adult orthodontics. At Fort Bend Dental we offer both Invisalign aligners and SureSmile aligners. Both of these treatments improve the position of the teeth and jaw by progressing patients through a series of clear plastic aligner trays. Like braces, these trays provide pressure that encourages tooth and jaw movement. However, aligners are virtually invisible, and they are also removable, which makes treatment extremely convenient.

Hybrid Treatment

Many adult patients prefer aligners for their orthodontic treatment, but complex issues may require traditional braces. If patients do not want to be in braces for the entirety of their orthodontic treatment we may be able to personalize a hybrid treatment plan, which involves the use of both aligners and braces.
