A Closer Look at Dental Bonding

During this cosmetic dental treatment, the doctor applies a composite resin to the teeth to improve their size, shape, and color. Our office will carefully customize the shade of the resin to match the enamel of your surrounding teeth so that the results blend in naturally. Dental bonding can address a wide range of cosmetic concerns, including:

  • Misshapen teeth
  • Stains that do not respond to teeth whitening
  • Cracked and chipped teeth
  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Disproportionate teeth

As long as your smile is healthy, you should qualify. However, underlying health problems such as gum disease or TMJ disorder must receive treatment first to ensure a healthy foundation for your results.

Chips and other small cosmetic flaws are common targets for dental bonding treatment.

Dental Bonding vs. Porcelain Veneers

Dental bonding can treat many of the same imperfections as porcelain veneers. Both options come with their particular pros and cons. While porcelain veneers last longer, they also require the removal of some enamel to place. In contrast, the doctor can place bonding immediately without preparation. Because dental bonding is consequently not permanent, patients who are still looking around for the right solution can try it without committing. Dental bonding may also be ideal for patients with tooth sensitivity due to enamel erosion. Finally, as a more cost-effective cosmetic treatment, dental bonding is preferred by patients who might be on a budget.

At Your Appointment

Your treatment will begin with a consultation with one of our dentists to determine if dental bonding is the most appropriate option for your goals. We work as conservatively as possible, recommending the least invasive treatments for fixing patients’ dental issues.

If dental bonding is suitable for your needs, you can either set up a second appointment to return to the office or undergo the procedure immediately. Your dentist will first place a barrier between the teeth and gums and then apply the resin. The doctor will then apply the material individually to each tooth, molding and shaping the resin to create a natural-looking, attractive appearance.

Finally, the doctor will expose the teeth to a curing light that hardens the material. At this point, they can polish the treated tooth and make any final adjustments. Depending on the number of teeth treated, the entire process can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour per tooth.

If you would like to overcome cosmetic dental flaws but are not ready to commit to veneers, dental bonding may be right for you.

Maintaining Your Results

Patients should be aware that, like natural teeth, composite resin is susceptible to staining. As such, you should try to avoid foods and beverages that can alter the shade of your smile. Tea, coffee, red wine, berries, and tobacco products are common culprits of such stains. Patients should also refrain from habits that could dislodge or compromise the bonding resin, such as chewing on ice or fingernails. Keeping up on your professional cleanings and exams is another important way to maintain your smile.
