The teeth are comprised of several layers. The outermost layer is enamel, which is one of the hardest substances in the body. Enamel protects the delicate inner layers of the teeth and allows individuals to bite and chew without experiencing pain or discomfort. Although enamel is durable, it can weaken over time, which increases the risk of oral injury. Chipped teeth are one of the most common types of oral injury.

At Fort Bend Dental, we offer a range of cosmetic dentistry treatments to improve the appearance of the smile by addressing flaws such as chipped teeth. For larger chips that threaten the health or structure of the tooth, we offer a comprehensive range of restorative dentistry treatments. Our experienced dentists are happy to discuss the treatments for chipped teeth available to our Missouri City, TX and Richmond, TX patients, and help them choose a treatment method that is most appropriate for their specific needs and desires.

Cosmetic Dental Bonding

For minor chips that are cosmetic in nature, cosmetic dental bonding may be the best solution. During this procedure, a tooth-colored compound is applied directly to the damaged tooth. Our dentist will shape this compound so that it fills in tooth enamel that has been chipped off, while blending in with the natural tooth. When we are happy with the results, the dental compound will be hardened and bonded to the tooth with a special light. This entire treatment is safe, non-invasive, and can usually be completed in under an hour. An added benefit is that it is one of the most affordable cosmetic dental treatments.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are another treatment for patients to consider when a chip is cosmetic and does not threaten the health of the tooth. Porcelain veneers are thin shells that are bonded to the facial surface of the teeth to conceal blemishes such as chips.

Porcelain veneers treatment does require the removal of a minimal amount of tooth enamel, which makes the procedure irreversible. However, it addresses a full range of cosmetic flaws to offer patients a complete smile makeover. The versatility of porcelain veneers is what makes them such a desireable treatment option among our patients.

Dental Crowns

Many chips are small enough that they do not extend beyond a tooth’s outer layer of enamel. However, some chips are larger and expose a tooth’s underlying dentin or pulp. When chips are severe, it makes it easier for bacteria to reach the center of the tooth, which increases the risk of dental complications such as root canal infection and tooth loss. These larger chips will need to be repaired with a restorative dentistry treatment, such as a dental crown.

After removing damaged tooth enamel, our dentists can place a dental crown to sit over the natural tooth and offer it strength and protection on all sides. A dental crown improves the look of a chipped tooth while preventing further dental problems.
