If you’re missing one tooth or several, you’ve probably heard that dental implants are one of the best ways to replace them. What many people don’t realize is that “dental implants” isn’t a one-size-fits-all treatment. There are different types of implants designed for different needs, and the right choice depends on your jawbone, your oral health, and your goals.
At Fort Bend Dental, our team has been serving the community since 1987. With five convenient locations in Missouri City, Richmond, Rosenberg, and Sugar Land, our dentists, including Dr. Dwight D. Peccora, who performs all stages of implant treatment in-office, help patients across Fort Bend County restore their smiles with confidence. We use digital 3D CT imaging and panoramic X-rays to plan each case carefully.
Here’s a closer look at the three main types of dental implants we offer, and how to know which one might be right for you.
Why Replacing Missing Teeth Matters
Missing teeth affect much more than the appearance of your smile. They can also make it harder to chew and speak clearly, and they can take a toll on your overall health.
When a tooth is lost, the jawbone in that area no longer receives stimulation from a tooth root. Over time, the bone can begin to shrink. Neighboring teeth may also shift into the gap, changing your bite and making those teeth harder to clean.
Dental implants help address these problems by replacing the root of the tooth, not just the part you see. That’s one reason they’re often considered the gold standard in tooth replacement.
Option 1: Traditional Dental Implants
Traditional implants have been in use for decades and have helped millions of people enjoy a better quality of life. A traditional implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone. Over time, the bone fuses with the post in a process called osseointegration, creating a strong, stable foundation for a crown, bridge, or denture.
Traditional implants may be a great fit if you:
- Have Healthy Jawbone Density: There needs to be enough bone to support the implant.
- Are Replacing One or a Few Teeth: Single implants and implant bridges can replace individual teeth.
- Want a Long-Lasting Solution: With proper care, implants can last for decades.
Option 2: Mini Dental Implants
Mini dental implants are about half the diameter of traditional implants. Because they’re smaller, they may be an option for patients whose jawbone density isn’t strong enough to support traditional implants.
Mini implants may be worth discussing if you:
- Have Reduced Bone Density: Mini implants can sometimes work where traditional implants can’t.
- Want to Stabilize a Denture: They can help keep a lower denture from slipping.
- Hope to Avoid More Extensive Procedures: Your dentist can let you know whether mini implants may help you skip additional treatments.
Option 3: All-on-4® Dental Implants
For patients missing most or all of their teeth in one arch, All-on-4 dental implants offer a full-arch solution. Four strategically placed implants support a complete denture that stays securely in place.
Some of the key benefits of All-on-4 include:
- Placed and Restored in a Day: Many patients leave with a new set of teeth the same day.
- Often No Bone Grafting Needed: The angled placement of the implants can help avoid grafting in many cases.
- Stable, Non-Slip Teeth: Unlike traditional dentures, All-on-4 teeth are anchored in place.
- Improved Chewing: Many patients can enjoy a wider range of foods.
Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?
Dental implants are an excellent option for many patients, but not everyone is a candidate. During your consultation, our team will evaluate several factors:
- Jawbone Density: Enough bone is needed to support the implant, though some patients may qualify for mini implants or All-on-4.
- Gum Health: Active gum disease can cause implants to fail, so it may need to be treated first.
- Smoking Status: Smoking can increase the risk of implant failure.
- Overall Health: Uncontrolled medical conditions, such as diabetes, can raise the risk of complications.
Our 3D CT imaging allows us to see your jawbone in detail so we can recommend the best option for your unique situation.
What to Expect During Implant Treatment
While every treatment plan is different, traditional implant treatment typically follows these steps:
- Consultation and Imaging: Your dentist examines your mouth and uses 3D imaging to plan treatment.
- Implant Placement: A small pilot hole is created in the jawbone, and the implant is placed.
- Healing and Fusion: Over about four to six months, the implant fuses with the bone.
- Abutment Placement: A connector piece is attached to the implant.
- Final Restoration: Your custom crown, bridge, or denture is placed.
At Fort Bend Dental, we also offer platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, which may help speed healing, and CEREC technology for designing and creating restorations in-office. Our team also offers sedation options for patients who feel anxious about dental treatment.
Caring for Your Dental Implants
Implants can’t get cavities, but the gums and bone around them still need care. To protect your investment:
- Brush Twice Daily: Clean around your implant restoration just like your natural teeth.
- Floss or Use Interdental Cleaners: Remove plaque from around the implant and gumline.
- Don’t Smoke: Smoking can affect healing and long-term implant success.
- Keep Regular Checkups: Professional cleanings and exams help keep your gums and implants healthy.
Dental Implant FAQs
- How long do dental implants last? With good care, dental implants can last for decades.
- Do dental implants hurt? The area is numbed during treatment, and sedation is available. Most patients report mild discomfort during recovery that can usually be managed with over-the-counter medication.
- How long is recovery? Recovery from extractions generally takes about two to three weeks, while full implant fusion takes several months.
- Can I get implants if I’ve had dentures for years? Many longtime denture wearers are candidates for implant-supported options. A consultation will help determine your best option.
