All-on-4 Dental Implants Aftercare and Cleaning
All-on-4® implant-retained dentures have many benefits, one of which is easy care and maintenance. Another major benefit is longevity.
Our dentists, with offices serving Missouri City, TX, Richmond, TX, and Fort Bend County residents, offer All-on-4® and can answer all of your questions about the procedure, recovery, and aftercare and cleaning of your new denture and implants.
Caring for the Treatment Site
Swelling, tenderness, and slight bleeding are common side effects following All-on-4 surgery.
During the first three days after your procedure, apply a cold compress to the outer cheek as much as possible to reduce swelling. Sleep with your head elevated on a pillow to avoid excessive swelling.
For mild to moderate pain, choose over-the-counter pain medication (like Tylenol, Motrin, or Advil) to ease aches every three to four hours. We will prescribe pain medication for more substantial pain. Additionally, your dentist will prescribe an antibiotic to keep oral bacteria at bay. Please take your medicine as directed. Do not share prescriptions with another person, even if they are experiencing similar symptoms.
Some bleeding at the incision site after surgery is common. Apply fresh gauze to the site for 30 minutes if you experience excessive bleeding. If the bleeding persists, repeat this process and call our office for further instructions.
Nourish Your Body
You will have a restricted diet after your All-on-4 placement to avoid potentially disturbing your implants. For the first several weeks after your procedure, you should enjoy plenty of soft foods, such as:
- Scrambled Eggs
- Protein Shakes
- Mashed Potatoes
Avoid spicy and very hot foods. These foods can irritate the surgical site.
Getting enough rest is imperative to your recovery. The quantity and quality of your sleep affects your immune system. It also influences the body’s ability to repair and grow tissue and bone. Maintaining good sleep hygiene can help you heal faster and fight off infection.
Cleaning Your Teeth
Your All-on-4 dentures are resistant to decay and infection, but the gums and bone underneath are not. Here is how to clean your All-on-4 dentures in four manageable steps:
- Floss with a Waterpik, super floss, or similar product to remove food particles and plaque.
- Rinse your mouth with an antibacterial mouthwash and water to reduce bacteria and minimize the risk of infection.
- Brush your tongue and cheeks to eliminate odors and bacteria.
- Scrub the implant site and under your dentures with a sulcus brush.
Healthy smiles are beautiful smiles. Attend regular dental appointments to maintain your oral health and ensure the longevity of your implants.
