BOTOX® injections are popular for smoothening facial wrinkles without surgery. But did you know that BOTOX can treat TMJ disorders too?

When injected into the facial muscles, BOTOX can effectively alleviate temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and jaw tension.

Wonder if BOTOX can help you with your TMJ disorder or jaw pain? Schedule a visit to Fort Bend Dental in Missouri City, Richmond, Rosenberg, Aliana and Sugar Land, TX.

What Is BOTOX?

BOTOX, or botulinum toxin, is a protein that is injected into the facial muscles, causing them to relax. This effect has many cosmetic and practical applications.

The Details of Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding is both problematic and common. A third of adults grind their teeth or clench their jaw during the day. Sometimes, folks suffer from this habit unconsciously. In fact, over 10% of adults grind or clench in their sleep.

Daytime grinding is often caused by anxiety, stress, and life tension. Nighttime causes can include acid reflux and sleep apnea. Jaw clenching can also be influenced by substance use, including caffeine and alcohol. Our dentists can evaluate the causes of your grinding and provide treatment.

Why BOTOX for TMJ Disorders

The temporomandibular joints (TMJs) are located on both sides of the head where the jawbone meets the skull. They are used very heavily, especially when you talk and eat. However, severe stress, jaw clenching, and teeth grinding can cause the TMJs to become inflamed, leading to uncomfortable side effects.

When BOTOX is injected into the facial muscles, it paralyzes the muscles in that area, making it impossible for them to move in a way that causes intense clenching and grinding. This can eliminate headaches, pain, and premature tooth wear.

I have had anxiety about the dentist since I was a kid. I really enjoy going here. I received dental work from Dr. Jerry B. He was really amazing and helped me to feel comfortable through the whole procedure. He talked to me and told me everything he was doing and constantly checked on my pain level, which was very bearable. I now am on a treatment plan for my gums which have improved immensely. I highly recommend this place!

What to Expect When You Receive BOTOX Injections for TMJ

BOTOX injections can be administered by one of our dentists in just 10 to 30 minutes. Here’s what to expect during an injection appointment at one of our offices.

Each session can be completed in just 10 to 30 minutes.

Numbing

Before administering the injections, our dentists will typically apply a numbing cream to the treatment sites. Discomfort during the procedure is very minimal, and patients compare the feeling to a bug bite or pinprick.

Injections

Depending on your symptoms, the dentist will then inject BOTOX into the forehead, jaw muscles, or other areas.

Results

There is no downtime required for BOTOX injections, but it typically takes a few days or up to a week for patients to feel the effects of the treatment and for TMJ symptoms to subside.

Follow-Up Appointments

A few months later, you will need to come back to our office to receive touch-up treatments to keep your TMJ disorder symptoms at bay.

What to Expect After Your Treatment

After about one week, you should notice less tenderness in your head and jaw. While some patients experience bruising or redness after receiving BOTOX injections, these usually fade quickly and are not a cause for worry.

To avoid spreading the BOTOX to other muscles in your face, avoid rubbing your face, try not to bend over, and refrain from strenuous activity until you are cleared by one of our Missouri City, Richmond, Aliana, Sugar Land or Rosenberg, TX, doctors.

Affordable Botox Treatment

Don't Break the Bank for TMJ Treatment

Many dental insurance plans will not cover costs for BOTOX treatment. However, our experienced team is very knowledgeable regarding dental insurance and can explore whether or not your plan happens to cover costs for injections used specifically for TMJ.

We hate to see budgets be a barrier to dental care that Richmond, Rosenberg, Missouri City, Aliana and Sugar Land locals desire. To help our patients pay, we accept CareCredit® and also offer in-house payment plans to aid affordability.
