dental crowns

Dental crowns traditionally require several weeks and multiple visits to the dentist. Temporary crowns must be worn while the permanent crowns are being produced, usually in a lab far away from your dentist’s office. But did you know that computer-aided drafting and manufacturing technology makes it possible to receive same-day crowns in just one visit, eliminating the need for temporary crowns and other inconveniences?

We invite you to take a closer look at traditional crowns vs. CEREC same-day crowns. Fort Bend Dental, serving Missouri City, TX, Richmond, TX, and the greater Fort Bend County region, can help you understand the differences between these options so you can make the best choice for your needs.

Traditional Crowns

Traditional crowns require multiple visits. During the first visit to the office, the dentist prepares the patient’s natural tooth and takes impressions to aid in designing a permanent dental crown. A temporary crown will be placed on your tooth while the permanent crown is being made in a lab.

This waiting period between temporary and permanent crowns can take two weeks or longer. Meanwhile, a temporary crown will increase the cost of your treatment.

Once the permanent crown has been made, you will return for a second dental visit. At this secondary visit, the permanent crown will be cemented into position with a special bonding material. The dentist will examine the crown to make sure the fit is comfortable and correct.

While traditional crowns take a little more time and require a temporary crown, they are sometimes the very best option if you prefer that your crown is made of premium materials.

CEREC Same-Day Crowns

Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic (CEREC) crown technology allows dentists to restore their teeth at the same office in a single day. Our highly trained dentists use computer-aided design and manufacturing to capture digital images of your tooth and jawbone to generate a customized blueprint for your crown.

The digital impressions guide automated tools in crafting your crown from a single block of dental porcelain chosen to match the color of your natural teeth. The process can be completed in just one visit to the dentist’s office, making it a much faster solution than traditional crowns.

Same-day crowns can last years and look natural, but might not be as durable or realistic as crowns made with premium materials requiring the traditional manufacturing process. During a consultation, you dentist can explain the differences and decide which solution will best meet your needs.
