Do I Need Oral Surgery?

Some patients may already be intimidated by regular dental checkups, so the thought of oral surgery can be even more stressful. However, visiting an oral surgeon can improve your oral health and prevent long-term issues. You may need to see an oral surgeon if:

You Have Tooth Loss

Since tooth roots normally provide the jaw with the stimulation it needs to stay strong, missing teeth can lead to the loss of bone tissue in your jawbone. In extreme cases, bone grafting may be necessary to strengthen your jaw. Dental implants can stimulate the jawbone tissue, preventing future tissue loss.

Your Wisdom Tooth Is Causing Pain

Wisdom teeth that do not fully erupt or come in at an odd angle can cause pain and force your other teeth to shift. Over time, this can cause misalignment in your bite, and can cause issues like TMJ disorders. We can remove your wisdom tooth through surgery at our Missouri City, Richmond, Aliana, Sugar Land, or Rosenberg, TX, offices.

You Have an Infected Tooth

The infection in a tooth can spread to other areas of the mouth and even the rest of your body if it enters the bloodstream. Extracting the infected tooth through a surgical procedure can preserve your oral health.

Your Smile Needs a Makeover

In addition to improving your overall oral health, our oral surgeons can enhance your smile with implants and false teeth. Maxillofacial surgery from Fort Bend Dental will have you both feeling and looking good.

If You Have Pain or Need a Tooth Removed

While general dentists can address a wide range of issues, oral surgeons have specialized training in surgical techniques. General dentists have a great understanding of dentistry as a whole but have no specialization in maxillofacial surgical procedures.

Our oral surgeons have access to specialized tools and technology that allows them to perform minimally invasive procedures. This puts patients undergoing dental implants, wisdom teeth removal, and bone grafting in the hands of dental professionals who are better equipped for surgical treatments.

Which Oral Surgery Procedure is Right for Me?

During your consultation at Fort Bend Dental, our oral surgeons will review your oral health history and goals for your smile. Our recommendations for oral surgery will be tailored to your unique needs.

Oral Surgery Services

The oral surgeons at Fort Bend Dental, a premier practice with offices in Missouri City, Richmond, Rosenberg, Aliana and Sugar Land, TX, perform many maxillofacial surgery procedures. Our practice offers the following services:

Dental Implants

If you’re missing a tooth, a dental implant is the best option to restore your smile and reduce your risk of jawbone atrophy. Implants can provide unparalleled support for many types of dental restoration, including dental crowns, bridges, and dentures.

Sinus Lift

A type of bone graft, a sinus lift is a maxillofacial surgery where the sinus membrane just above the jawbone is lifted. This creates space for a bone graft between the jaw and sinuses, allowing patients with bone atrophy to receive dental implants.

Sedation Dentistry

For patients who suffer from dental anxiety, our offices offer sedation dentistry to help put you at ease during your procedure. The sedative medications help induce a state of deep relaxation. As a result, patients can enjoy a less stressful experience.

Extraction

Impacted wisdom teeth are a popular extraction procedure done at our dentist’s offices. Extractions are also recommended for teeth that are too infected for a successful root canal. Teeth that are loosened due to gum disease or are experiencing extensive decay may also be candidates for extraction.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom teeth that don’t have enough room to erupt properly can cause impaction and overcrowding. This can lead to constant sensitivity and pain in your other teeth and gums. By removing the wisdom tooth, we can preserve your other teeth and stop the source of your pain. We can also remove wisdom teeth before they cause pain or misalignment of your other teeth.

Bone Grafting

For dental implants to be successful, patients are required to have a minimum amount of bone tissue. Bone grafting is a surgery that adds tissue to areas of bone loss, increasing its density. In many cases, bone grafting is done at the same time as the extraction in order to preserve the site for a future implant.

Recovering From Oral Surgery

After implant surgery or extraction, patients will need to follow a few guidelines for their recovery. The oral surgeons in our Missouri City, Richmond, Rosenberg, Aliana and Sugar Land, TX, offices recommend you:

Limit Activity

Elevating your heart rate can cause increased swelling, bleeding, and discomfort in your oral cavity. For a faster, more successful recovery, Fort Bend Dental recommends patients avoid heavy lifting and strenuous physical activity.

Eat Soft Foods

For the first few days after your surgery, you should eat soft foods like ice cream, smoothies, yogurt, and eggs. As the site of the surgical procedure heals, more solid food can be reintroduced into your diet. The team at Fort Bend Dental will provide dietary recommendations.

Follow Directions for Medication

After your surgery, our oral surgeons will provide prescription medication for you. Patients are urged to take antibiotics, pain relievers, and other medication as prescribed to avoid unwanted side effects.

Use Cold Compresses

Cold compresses can reduce face swelling after oral surgery. For maximum results, you should use a cold compress within 24 hours after your procedure. Afterward, you should apply the cold compress in 20-minute sessions as the swelling decreases.

I was told I had a large cyst below my lower left molar. Luckily, I was able to schedule an appointment. They assured me I was fine and only needed a procedure called an apicoectomy. Almost a month and a half later and I am CONFIDENT I chose the right team for the job. T
