While dental implants are a great option for those with missing teeth, some patients are not candidates. You may not qualify for dental implants if your bone density is insufficient, you have underlying health conditions, or you have periodontal disease.

If you are not a candidate, the dentists at Fort Bend Dental will recommend dental implant alternatives. In our Missouri City, TX, office, we offer a range of treatments to replace missing teeth. During a consultation, we discuss all options and work with you to choose the best course of action.

Dental Bridges

At our Richmond, TX, practice, our dental team provides dental bridges for patients with missing teeth. A bridge consists of one or more custom-created teeth with crowns on either side for support.

We use CEREC® technology to create natural-looking crowns and place them in one visit. Our Missouri City, TX, dental team uses CEREC® to create digital impressions. We then use the model to design the restoration to match the color and shape of your natural teeth.

Benefits of Bridges

Traditional bridges do not require surgery, so this option is quicker and more convenient. You might experience some tenderness or discomfort after your dentist places the bridge, but it normally does not last long. Insurance typically covers this restoration partially or fully.

Dentures

At our Fort Bend County office, our dentists will examine you to see if a full or partial denture appliance is appropriate to replace missing teeth. As an alternative to dental implants, dentures work well for patients with severely damaged teeth or those with complete or localized tooth loss. If your bone density is too low, our dentists can perform a bone graft to encourage new bone growth.

Adjacent teeth or clasps hold the partial denture securely in place. Some of these dentures come with a clip or attachment to connect them to existing crowns or bridges. Full dentures are designed to fit the upper and lower gums comfortably, making eating and talking easier.

Benefits of Dentures

Both partial and full dentures are affordable compared to other restoration treatments. Surgery typically is not needed before dentures unless you have gum disease or need a bone graft. You can also enjoy the freedom of removing dentures whenever it suits you.

What Happens Without Treatment?

By not seeking treatment for your missing teeth, you could continue to lose jawbone density. The more bone you lose, the more unstable your jaw becomes. The instability usually results in issues with chewing and talking. Many patients also notice that they look older. Additionally, you might experience the following symptoms:

  • Distorted facial features
  • Recurring headaches
  • Deficient nutrition

When to See a Dentist

You should contact your dentist if you are experiencing any pain or discomfort. Since missing teeth can affect your daily activities, you need to seek treatment when you cannot chew and eat adequately, even if you are not in pain. Missing teeth can also impact your smile and self-esteem.
