How Long Do Porcelain Veneers Last? By Dwight D. Peccora, DDS on June 30, 2020

Porcelain veneers mask teeth that are chipped, cracked, gapped, or discolored. These restorations bring balance and symmetry to your smile and give you a boost in confidence.

At Fort Bend Dental, our doctors offer porcelain veneer treatment. Many patients at our Missouri City, TX, or Richmond, TX, office want to know how long porcelain veneers last. Here, we will answer that question and offer some tips for prolonging the life of your restorations.

Porcelain Veneers Can Last for over a Decade

On average, porcelain veneers last between five and 15 years. But if they are cared for properly, they can last two decades or longer. As more advanced materials are introduced, the lifespan of porcelain veneers is increasing.

It is also important to know that veneers made from porcelain are far more durable than their composite counterparts. In fact, according to a 2018 research study by the National Institutes of Health, composite veneers fail significantly faster than porcelain veneers.

How to Know If Veneers Need to Be Replaced

Regular dental visits are essential for the long-term health of your veneers. Many times, your dentist can detect problems early on and treat them before they worsen. If you notice any of these issues, it could be time to replace your veneers:

  • Your veneers are visibly cracked, chipped, or worn down
  • The gums are receding or pulling away from the veneers
  • The underlying tooth structure is decayed
  • Your veneers feel loose

The Replacement Process

If your veneers need to be replaced, the second process is much like the first. Your dentist removes the old veneers and takes impressions of your teeth.

Next, this information is sent to our dental lab, where a technician will create a working dental model. Your new veneers are crafted by layering ceramic until the desired results are achieved. Dental ceramic reflects light the same way as natural enamel, giving patients truly lifelike outcomes.

Once your veneers are complete, you will be scheduled for a second visit to our office. Your dentist will then carefully bond your new veneers permanently into place.

Caring for Your Veneers

Fortunately, maintaining porcelain veneers does not take a lot of extra work – just some diligence. Here are some recommendations that will keep your restorations in excellent condition:

  • Never use your teeth as tools. Tearing off tape, opening packages, or removing clothing tags with your teeth is never a good idea. These bad habits can harm your natural teeth as well as your veneers.
  • Brush two to three times a day. While porcelain is impervious to decay, the natural tooth structure is not. To avoid cavities, brush your teeth thoroughly with a soft brush and a nonabrasive toothpaste.
  • Floss once daily. Clean between the teeth at least once every day. You can use floss, interproximal brushes, or dental picks. Ask our team to demonstrate proper techniques.
  • Avoid extremely hard or sticky foods. Things like nuts, popcorn, or ice can cause your veneers to crack or chip. Caramel and taffy may dislodge your restorations. It is best to avoid these foods altogether.
  • Attend regular dental visits. Routine examinations and cleanings help our team identify any potential problems and treat them right away.
