Woman with a perfect smile.

The phrase “smile makeover” has been in popular use now for nearly two decades, its place in the public consciousness almost as assured as “cosmetic dentistry,” itself. Funnily enough, however, many people still do not know exactly what a smile makeover is. A smile makeover is not a procedure, per se; rather, it is an umbrella term used to describe a comprehensive treatment plan into which various cosmetic dentistry treatments are combined and customized based on the unique needs and goals of the individual patient. When patients turn to dental professionals such as the skilled, experienced dentists of Fort Bend Dental, they can be assured that their smile makeovers will be as unique as their smiles. Just as no two smiles are alike, no two smile makeovers should be alike.

In that spirit, your candidacy for your smile makeover would be assured because it would be your smile makeover. You would not be a candidate for someone else’s smile makeover because, obviously, it would not be ideally suited to your unique smile. However, every smile makeover must be built upon a foundation of strong oral health; otherwise, the cosmetic improvements would be for naught. Therefore, we carefully evaluate smile makeover candidates at our Missouri City, TX cosmetic, restorative, and general dentistry practice to ensure that they are in good oral health before we proceed with cosmetic treatments.

Are you a good candidate for a custom smile makeover? We invite you to schedule a consultation with one of our esteemed dentists today to find out for yourself.

What Are the Minimal Oral Health Requirements to Undergo a Smile Makeover?

Many of the cosmetic dentistry treatments that are commonly integrated into a smile makeover plan – porcelain veneers, dental bonding, and teeth whitening, for instance – require that patients be free from advanced periodontal disease before treatment. Therefore, if you have extensive periodontal disease – and periodontitis, the most advanced stage of periodontal disease, in particular – we will have to treat that before we can start performing the cosmetic dentistry phase of your smile makeover. Otherwise, we will be improving the appearance of teeth that will be at high risk of falling out – periodontal disease is the number-one cause of tooth loss among adults.

It is also important that any missing teeth are replaced as part of your smile makeover, preferably with implant-supported restorations. A dental crown supported with a dental implant will not require the alteration or support of any natural teeth, and it will look entirely natural while functioning remarkably like a natural tooth.

If You Are in Good Oral Health, Are You a Candidate for a Smile Makeover?

If you are in good oral health, whether you come into our office free of gum disease and other dental problems or we take care of them in advance of your smile makeover, then you are almost certainly a suitable candidate for a smile makeover. As long as you have reasonable expectations for your results, which we will help to establish, you should be able to enjoy the benefits of this comprehensive cosmetic dentistry treatment plan.
